A Wartime Revue

The music and humour of the Second World War inspired and uplifted a whole generation during Britain ’s darkest and finest hour. Drawing on broadcasts, songs and sketches, along with first-hand accounts, Home Service evokes the hardships, humour and heroism of those fighting the war on the Home Front, and brings to life the Forties in all their grit and grandeur.

This brand new show from Susan and Michael is as sure to delight as their previous collaborations: A Wilde Affair, More Tea, Vicar?, Pass the Port, and Wit’s End.

Martyna Jatkauskaite, who was scheduled to play, has, regretably, sustained an injury which prevents her from performing. HADCAF is delighted that Alexander Karpeyev is able to take her place. He has been a major prizewinner in many international competitions, including (this year) the Sidney Perry Award (Martin Musical Scholarship Fund); Dudley International Piano Competition (1 st prize and Audience Prize); Myra Hess Trust (winner); Craxton Memorial Trust (winner).

The Cotswold Children’s Choir

The Burford-based choir was formed in 1997 to offer children the opportunity to sing a variety of music to the highest possible standard. It aims to provide not only pleasure from singing and opportunities for performance, but also an all-round grounding in musical skills leading to a love and appreciation of music. The choir has performed at the Albert Hall as well as many local venues.

Skiing Solo to the South Pole

Illustrated talk by explorer and adventurer Hannah McKeand

Hannah dragged a sledge weighing up to 100kg across one of the world’s harshest terrains and in some of the lowest temperatures on earth, in an effort that put her in the history books as the fastest person to trek alone and unsupported to the geographic South Pole. The 33-year-old former marketing manager at The Watermill Theatre skied into the record books by completing the 690-mile marathon from the edge of Antarctica in 39 days, 9 hours and 33 minutes, beating by nearly two days the previous record.

Hannah has trekked the deserts of north Africa, visited isolated villages in Afghanistan ’s Hindu Kush mountain range, competed in the 2005 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, and recently sailed from Tasmania to the South Magnetic Pole, off Antarctica, in her 20-metre yacht Blizzard.

Charles Pooter, a respectable clerk in 1890s London, records the aspirations, trials and tribulations of his life both at the office and at home in suburban Holloway: a life involving insolent junior employees, his long-suffering wife Carrie, and the escapades and scrapes of his son Lupin.

Accompanied on piano by Wendy Norman, Kirsty Bennett and Clive Ward present a hilarious and touching evening in this witty chronicle of Victorian suburban life that strikes many chords with life today.

Clive Ward trained at New College of Speech & Drama (now part of Middlesex University ). Kirsty Bennett studied singing at Trinity College of Music and The Royal Academy of Music, and has since made her living as an actress. (When she was 12 her father told her she would learn all she needed to know about English comedy from three books: Cold Comfort Farm, Diary of a Nobody, and Three Men in aBoat. She has already played Flora Poste in a musical version of Cold Comfort Farm, and following this year’s challenge of playing everybody but the nobody, will soon be auditioning for the part of Montmorency the dog.) Wendy Norman studied piano and flute at the Royal College of Music.

As Trio Sospiroso, Clare, Sue and Jenny have been presenting the delightful repertoire for flute, viola and harp in concerts over the last 11 years.  Individually they have wide experience performing both locally and over the south of England , as well as being established teachers in Berkshire . The romantic and exotic programme includes Bax's Celtic-inspired ‘Elegiac Trio’, the G minor Flute Sonata of Bach, a richly-coloured arrangement of Debussy's ‘Children's Corner’, and Salzedo's exhilarating orchestration of Ravel.

Frances Jones specialises in recitals on wind instruments and has made a particular study of works for the classical saxophone. She is soloist and principal player with many orchestras, and is well known to HADCAF audiences for her performances of The Joy of the Saxophone, The Romantic Oboe and The Amazing Alphorn.

Martin Jones has given many recitals and piano concertos to critical acclaim. Together this versatile couple has been delighting audiences for over 25 years with their entertaining and eclectic recitals of works ranging from Bach to Benny Hill.

The Medlam Family String Quartet

The quartet consists of multi-talented Lukas (21, Newbury Young Musician of the Year 2002) and Hannah (19, Newbury Young Musician of the Year 2006), who both play the violin and take it in turns to lead; their mother Ingrid (first violist with London Baroque), who was required to learn the viola since at the time the quartet was formed she had the biggest hands, and cellist father Charles (baroque ‘cello and viola da gamba in London Baroque). They first ventured onto the concert platform at local events in 2000 and have since performed frequently in various guises including a live broadcast of one of Lukas’ pieces for Oxford Radio.

The programme includes works by Mozart, Bach, Borodin, Franck, Massenet, Paganini, Fauré and Debussy, as well as a composition by Lukas.

West End actress Felicity Goodson’s credits range from Shakespeare in Regent’s Park to musicals such as Cats, Stepping Out and Les Miserables. Her television appearances include Men Behaving Badly, Rumpole of the Bailey, Trainer and Prince Among Men. Theatre appearances have included An Evening with Gary Lineker and Run for Your Wife. Putting the Kettle On is the second play Simon Brett has specially written for her, and has been turned into an Afternoon Play on BBC Radio 4.

Sing the Year Round

Life as a farm labourer was hard at the turn of the century but it was not without its pleasures and celebrations. Starting in August, at the beginning of harvest - probably one of the most intensive working periods in the rural calendar – the show traverses the year, telling of celebrations, love, drink, hard work, dancing, customs, preparations for the new year, spring and summer, through to the harvest again.

Tinkers Bag have sung and performed traditional music together for the past ten years at clubs and festivals as well as on radio and TV. They play an amazing array of instruments, including guitar, bazouki, mandola, mandolin, concertina, melodeon, whistle, flute, recorder, Appalachian dulcimer, drums and cymbals, kazoo and triangle. A foot-tapping, fun evening is guaranteed!
