Founded by musicologist and choral director Richard Vendome, Vivaldi’s Women is an all-female ensemble of singers and players which aims to recreate the sound of Vivaldi’s Figlie di Choro, those foundlings who performed at Mass and Vespers from behind grilles in the high choir lofts, and who provided sacred ‘entertainment’ for visitors making the Grand Tour. Thu 9 July | Indonesian Satria Arts Workshop led by Malcolm Bray
Banned by Dutch colonialists, the Indonesian Satria (warrior) arts had to be concealed within the Kembangan (flower dance) which, accompanied by traditional music, was used to enact stories and historical events through physical expression. Hand gestures, steps and physical shapes (based on animals and the natural world) form the basis of the movements, but the emphasis is on free-flowing personal expression – which means that anyone can take part, irrespective of age, gender or ability. Malcolm has studied martial arts for 15 years, concentrating exclusively on the Satria for the last seven. He runs regular classes in Newbury (tel. 0790 527 6375). In this ‘taster’ class he and his students will give a half-hour performance before introducing the basic movements through exercises, stretching and choreographing short sequences, leading to the expression of a story or theme. Come and have a go, and leave your own mark on the dance of life!

Set in the 1960s amid the turbulent years of anti-war protest, the struggle for free speech and civil rights, psychedelia and rock ’n’ roll, Across the Universe tells the story of Jude’s star-crossed love affair with Lucy, following the couple as they are swept up in the evolving counterculture. A combination of live action and animation, the film is paired with 33 songs by The Beatles that defined the era.
Directed by the visionary Julie Taymor, it stars Rachel Evan Wood and Jim Sturgess, with cameos by Joe Cocker, Eddie Izzard - and Hungerford actor Nick Lumley!
Nominated for 2007 Golden Globe Best Picture 2007 Academy Award Appeared on several film critics' top ten lists of the best films of 2007
‘Across the Universe’ believes wholeheartedly in the quaint, communitarian spirit it exalts. You share the joy of its blissed-out hippies in the grass. You feel the deepening friendship between Jude and Max that is sealed in Max’s incandescent performance of “Hey, Jude”. And during the time it lasts, the intoxicating passion of Jude and Lucy, both innocents by today’s standards, convinces, for a moment, that love is all you need.’ New York Times ‘An audacious marriage of cutting-edge visual techniques, heart-warming performances, 1960s to 1970 history and the Beatles songbook. It’s the kind of movie you watch again, like listening to a favourite album.’ Chicago Sun-Times ‘Across the Universe sweeps you up on a wave of terrific Beatles songs.’ Rolling Stone
