WordWatchingWordWatching with comedian Alex Horne

For four years Alex’s secret mission has been to create a word and get it implanted in the English language. Since then his new words have appeared in most of the national newspapers, on Sky News, the Daily Politics Show and in an interview with George Alagiah on BBC World seen by 250 million people. This evening he recounts the highs and lows of this undercover linguistic campaign, and signs copies of his books.

Austen’s WomenAusten’s Women Co-written and performed by Rebecca Vaughan

Co-written & directed by Guy Masterson.

‘A startling feat of performance, portrayal, writing & direction...strongly recommended’ Edinburgh Fringe Review

‘Vaughan's performance was unfaultable...this is a thoroughly enjoyable exploration of women and is thoroughly recommended’ Edinburgh Guide

You do not need to have read Jane Austen to enjoy this wickedly funny show, but it will almost certainly inspire you to do so! In this glorious distillation of favourite moments from the complete works, thirteen of her acutely-observed women spring to life in scenes ranging from high comedy to profound pathos as they fall in and out of love, make friends and enemies - and commit shocking improprieties!

Rebecca’s dazzling performance received 5-star reviews at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe. In addition to film and television work, her recent theatre credits include The Picture of Dorian Gray (Bill Kenwright), Room 24 (Nuffield Theatre) and Havisham (BAC).

This Farming LifeThis Farming Life with Tom and Barbara Brown

‘A wonderful, magical and memorable evening’ Artservice

‘Two of the finest singers on the folk scene; each is blessed with a wonderfully strong, rich and earthy tone of voice and a definitive, innate grasp of harmony’ NetRhythm

Integrating archive film and traditional song together in an innovative way, This Farming Life combines images and words about farming and rural life from as early as the 1920s through to the 1970s. From heavy horses, through early traction, the drift from the land, rural industries, and a great deal more, the show includes interviews with farming people, documentary extracts, silent archive footage, early television news features, folk songs, modern songs and readings, resulting in an entertaining, informative and nostalgic evening which induces laughter as it stirs memories.

Barbara and Tom (who plays guitar, mandola, concertina and melodeon) have been singing together since 1970 and perform at gigs all over the UK. Although their speciality is songs of the West Country, their repertoire draws from a huge range of traditional and modern songs.

Adapted from War Letters by Havilland Le Mesurier & directed by Tricia Thorns.

Eco Chic Fashion Show VENUE CHANGED

Look good, be stylish, dress creatively! Textile students from John O’Gaunt School and ladies of the WI get together with Hungerford’s charity shops to show you how, by recycling, refashioning and reinventing, customising and accessorising clothes – in a word, upcycling!

The clothes, hats and fascinators modelled this evening will surely stimulate ideas for revamping those unworn, unloved items that lurk at the back of all our wardrobes - and show that there are treasures to be found on the rails of charity shops which, with the addition of well-chosen accessories, can be updated and given a whole new look, a whole new lease of life. This is sustainable fashion!

Plus African recycled beads, Alpaca, fabulous hats and more!

Please note change of venue to John O'Gaunt School and slightly later start at 8pm

Why Did the Cow Slip? Illustrated talk by Charles Flower

Why wild flowers are no joking matter

You’ll be surprised what happens if you re-establish wild flowers with all the nectar they provide - butterflies, bees and other wild life appear. If we don’t encourage wild flowers back in our towns, villages and schools we will have no understanding of the whole life pyramid.
Charles will suggest wild flowers to attract wild life to the garden and landscape.

Charles Flower established Flower Farms at Carvers Hill Farm, Shalbourne in 1980. The farm grows 12 acres of native wild flowers for seed production. Restoring the wild flowers has had a remarkable effect on the number of species of butterflies and farmland birds now to be seen there.

Lust for LifeLust for Life The biopic of Vincent Van Gogh

Kirk Douglas gives the performance of a lifetime in his award-winning portrayal of the tormented artist. Nearly 200 of Van Gogh’s original paintings were borrowed from museums and private collections for the film, which faithfully recreates many of the scenes in his most famous works. The film is also notable for its luscious use of colour and for the extraordinary physical resemblances between the historical figures and the actors, especially that between Gauguin and Anthony Quinn (winner of the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor).

The Trials of Galileo by Nic YoungThe Trials of Galileo by Nic Young Performed by Tim Hardy

Written to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s discoveries, The Trials of Galileo explores the tensions between science and religion through one man’s struggle for intellectual and spiritual salvation. Already denounced by the church in 1616 and forbidden to advocate or teach Copernican astronomy, in 1632, following the publication of his most famous work, Dialogue concerning the Two Chief World Systems, Galileo was tried by the Inquisition, found ‘vehemently suspect of heresy’, forced to recant, and spent the rest of his life under house arrest.

‘A thrilling show about one of the crucial moments in the history of Western civilisation: the confrontation between science and religion… This is drama that makes you think but also laugh and cry. Anyone who loves theatre should see this performance’ Peter Holland, former Director of The Shakespeare Institute

‘Passionate, intelligent, hilarious, chilling’ Gary Taylor, General Editor of The Oxford Shakespeare’s Complete Works

Tim Hardy has directed and performed in many productions across the UK, Europe and the United States. As well as roles in numerous musicals, operas and films, including Guys and Dolls, Don Giovanni and Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, he has also performed in television programmes for the BBC and ITV and narrated over 300 television documentaries.
