‘A wonderful, magical and memorable evening’ Artservice
‘Two of the finest singers on the folk scene; each is blessed with a wonderfully strong, rich and earthy tone of voice and a definitive, innate grasp of harmony’ NetRhythm
Integrating archive film and traditional song together in an innovative way, This Farming Life combines images and words about farming and rural life from as early as the 1920s through to the 1970s. From heavy horses, through early traction, the drift from the land, rural industries, and a great deal more, the show includes interviews with farming people, documentary extracts, silent archive footage, early television news features, folk songs, modern songs and readings, resulting in an entertaining, informative and nostalgic evening which induces laughter as it stirs memories.
Barbara and Tom (who plays guitar, mandola, concertina and melodeon) have been singing together since 1970 and perform at gigs all over the UK. Although their speciality is songs of the West Country, their repertoire draws from a huge range of traditional and modern songs.

Wed 21 July | Why Did the Cow Slip? Illustrated talk by Charles Flower
Why wild flowers are no joking matter
You’ll be surprised what happens if you re-establish wild flowers with all the nectar they provide - butterflies, bees and other wild life appear. If we don’t encourage wild flowers back in our towns, villages and schools we will have no understanding of the whole life pyramid. Charles will suggest wild flowers to attract wild life to the garden and landscape.
Charles Flower established Flower Farms at Carvers Hill Farm, Shalbourne in 1980. The farm grows 12 acres of native wild flowers for seed production. Restoring the wild flowers has had a remarkable effect on the number of species of butterflies and farmland birds now to be seen there.

Kirk Douglas gives the performance of a lifetime in his award-winning portrayal of the tormented artist. Nearly 200 of Van Gogh’s original paintings were borrowed from museums and private collections for the film, which faithfully recreates many of the scenes in his most famous works. The film is also notable for its luscious use of colour and for the extraordinary physical resemblances between the historical figures and the actors, especially that between Gauguin and Anthony Quinn (winner of the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor).

Fri 23 July | The Trials of Galileo by Nic Young Performed by Tim Hardy
Written to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s discoveries, The Trials of Galileo explores the tensions between science and religion through one man’s struggle for intellectual and spiritual salvation. Already denounced by the church in 1616 and forbidden to advocate or teach Copernican astronomy, in 1632, following the publication of his most famous work, Dialogue concerning the Two Chief World Systems, Galileo was tried by the Inquisition, found ‘vehemently suspect of heresy’, forced to recant, and spent the rest of his life under house arrest.
‘A thrilling show about one of the crucial moments in the history of Western civilisation: the confrontation between science and religion… This is drama that makes you think but also laugh and cry. Anyone who loves theatre should see this performance’ Peter Holland, former Director of The Shakespeare Institute
‘Passionate, intelligent, hilarious, chilling’ Gary Taylor, General Editor of The Oxford Shakespeare’s Complete Works
Tim Hardy has directed and performed in many productions across the UK, Europe and the United States. As well as roles in numerous musicals, operas and films, including Guys and Dolls, Don Giovanni and Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, he has also performed in television programmes for the BBC and ITV and narrated over 300 television documentaries.
